World Rally Championship 2015 continued with its third event in Mexico last weekend. Crew of Jipocar Czech National Team had very good start into the race and moved from 7th to 6th place overall after excellent performance on Saturday.
At the finish of the race, satisfied driver of Ford Fiesta WRC Martin Prokop was commenting the difficult and demanding event: „We started very motivated and in very good pace on Saturday morning. We were battling very close to the factory teams and were enjoying every single meter of special stages. I can say that it was my best moment in rally car, maybe best ever performance so far. Despite this euphoria and very good results from the morning section, I made a choice to slow down a bit during the afternoon loop because it showed clear to me that I simply can’t catch the extremely fast guys in front of me. I also tried to save the car a bit because this rally was really very rough. After good performance of me and my co-driver and also benefiting from the problems of Latvala, we moved to 6th place overall. I decided to stay on the safe side on Sunday, stick to my position and safe the car. Fans were maybe looking forward to see bloody battle for 5th place but honestly, that was not possible at my situation. We also had some dramatic moments when we hit a big stone close to the end of penultimate special stage and went off the track on big rocks. Right front wheel was broken, blocked in brake caliper. But all Mexican saints helped us for sure, because we managed to finish the stage, change the wheel and finish the whole rally. We got the end of the race with battered Fiona and also our mechanics have got right to be ruined and totally exhausted. I must say thank you guys for excellent work. For sure they do not remember such demanding and dramatic repairs and changes of so many parts of the car. I also want to thank to all fans, the complete „team spirit“ during the Rally Mexico was just fantastic.“
Also team manager Quirin Müller is happy: „Excellent performance, great rally and valuable points for Martin, Jenda and our team. Martin pushed hard when necessary but slowed down to safe car when possible. My secret personal wish was to win one of the short super special stages but unfortunately few tenths of second were always missing. Big thanks goes to mechanics of M-Sport who helped us during dramatic times in service park. I can’t recall any other rally where Fiona was suffering so much. We lost the rear skid plate and spare wheel because of big impact on Friday, car was damaged from stones, gearbox had to be changed etc. Really crazy. We finished 5th here in Mexico last year but now our loss per kilometer is much smaller, followed by the same extremely fast pace of the best guys in front what shows how Martin’s speed and performance is improving. Overall the season is started very well. “
Next event of World Rally Championship is Rally Argentina (April 23rd- 26th), on gravel again. Martin finished fourth there three years ago what was the best result of Czech rally driver in history of World Championship.
